This month (February 2014) I was in The National League of American Penwomen’s Show in the Knauer Gallery at the Visual and Performing Arts Center in West Chester University.
Myself and ten other professional artists displayed a wide variety of styles and techniques. It gets dismantled tomorrow, but, I thought everyone might enjoy a brief viewing of the exhibition. Enjoy!

Paper Sojurn Art Show

The Guild of Papermakers displays their handmade paper artwork at Montgomery County Community College, West Campus from October 30th through December 13th.

Unique Hand Made books

As an artist and librarian, books in all forms have always been of interest to me. In this video you will see some traditional and some creative artistic statements. Papermaking also plays an important role in some of my more unique structures.

Food for Thought is a statement on what many important people have said about food throughout history. To make this book I used carrots, mulberry, celery, onions, and asparagus in the background. The book itself has rhubarb paper for the outside, corn paper as the end papers, and mulberry, asparagus, and herbs for the book paper.

The head is covered with thin paper made from kozo and cotton.

Most of these books are showing at my show: The Artist's Brush in Phoenixville, PA.

The Artist's Brush: Fine Art and Sculpture with Linda McNeil

Come and browse through my one woman exhibit.

It will open on August 2, 2013 at the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area.

It will continue to be open until late October (26th).

They will have a wine and cheese opening Friday night, August 2, from 6-9 PM.

I will be there both Friday night and Sunday Aug 4 from 1-4 PM.

Additional show hours are available during regular Historical society hours.

Wednesday and Friday between 9 am and 3 pm   

First Friday- 6 to 9 pm (This is also Phoenixville’s big night about town)

First Sunday of each month between 1 and 4 pm.

The entrance to the museum is on Church St. (204 Church St)

Parking:  On the street or bank lot to the right of the museum.

The Fall is a fun time.
Kids love it at Halloween and hayride times.
Milky Way Farm is a fun place at that time of year.

Spring flowers bring color....

Daffodils are the forerunners of sunny days and more Spring flowers to come. I also notice that they tell us a lot about the climate in my yard. I love to grow the flowers I paint. Each Spring I start looking on the South side of my house for the early bloomers. It is amazing how it takes several weeks for the bulbs in other parts of the yard to start blooming. I don't complain because I then have more time to enjoy their company in my artroom. I did the daffodils last year. This year I am going to try snowdrops and crocus. So keep checking back.
This serigraph is an edition of 100. I then take the black/white print and handcolor the flower. Each print is unique because my palette constantly changes with my different choice of colors. I like to frame them in a tradition gold frame with a simple matting. But framing is a personal choice when you need to fit it into your home.

Love can be whimsical

Valentine can be fun for a whimsical person. I painted this painting sometime before Valentine's Day shortly after I did a similar card for my husband. I had fun thinking up all of the graffitti on the walls.

What is fine art?

When I talk to folks in art shows, people ask what I consider fine art. This is a unique presentation that more or less defines the concept of fine art.

An exciting project....

Over the Summer I spent some time and pulled together many of the books I have made over the past few years. They range from whimsical to radically using a band saw to cut up books to make another book. Enjoy looking at it.

Summer Treats

When the hot days of Summer roll around, I start to think about the delicious treats that will be bountiful in the markets and roadside stands. One of my favorites is the blueberry. I have many a memory of picking them in my own backyard and in the poconos. Picking is slow going if you take the time to weed out the twigs and other tag alongs. It gives me plenty of time to study the plant leaves and bushes as well as the berries themselves. Of course I can't study those that go quickly onto my mouth.
I have created an etching of blueberries in a limited edition. When the etchings have been pulled, I then get out my watercolors and hand color each print. Many people comment that this technique looks similar to the old fashioned etchings found in old books and parlors.

General comments

If you take a moment to check out the composite picture above, you will see that I like to work in a variety of media. Chester County has a wide variety of stone barns and beautiful flowers. In just a few moments I can be in Philadelphia sketching some of the greatest historical building in our Nation. This week I am working on my blueberry sketches. I will either print them using the etching procedure or as a serigraph. The finishing touches will be completed by hand coloring the printed black and white line drawings.

I want to welcome everyone to my blog. I hope to take some time to explain what I had in mind when I completed some of my paintings and other projects. Some of my ramblings will involve techniques and how-todos. At other times I will share some unusual and even funny antidotes.
